Hulls are dry and porous, so the mould risk in a buckwheat pillow comes from trapped moisture around them rather than from the fill itself.

How is a hull pillow maintained?

By airing it, keeping it out of damp, and topping up the fill as the hulls break down over years.

The casing washes; the hulls do not, and getting that the wrong way round ruins the pillow.
